FROM THE CEO

We need fresh ideas to address housing affordability in Australia but scaling back infrastructure investment is not one of them.

Unfortunately, this is one of the recommendations of the NSW Productivity and Equality Commissioners’ Review of Housing Supply Challenges and Policy Options for NSW.

Scaling back infrastructure spending won’t solve the housing crisis

ADVOCATING FOR YOUR BUSINESS SUCCESS

Unlocking potential

How our advocacy is building pressure

A series of industry conferences and conversations this month has revealed “a glimmer of light” at the end of a long tunnel, says Consult Australia’s Kristy Eulenstein, and the potential for more collaborative behaviours in Australia’s infrastructure and construction industry.

Collaborative contracting

The antidote to an adversarial industry

Most contracts are designed for lawyers or, occasionally, financiers. But NEC contracts are designed for the engineering profession. As part of a new partnership Consult Australia and NEC Contracts will explore how the NEC suite can tackle persistent issues faced by members.

Accelerating net zero

What the sectoral pathways mean for infrastructure

The Climate Change Authority has released its review of the six ‘sectoral pathways’ for Australia to meet net zero emissions by 2050. What does this mean for infrastructure and Consult Australia members?

PEOPLE & MOVEMENTS

The Albanese Government has appointed Tim Reardon, Clare Gardiner-Barnes and Dr Gillian Miles as the Commissioners of Infrastructure Australia for five-year terms. The appointments follow a merit-based recruitment process. Tim Reardon will start in the role of Chief Commissioner on 1 October 2024 after the completion of his current commitments.

Louise McCormick, who previously served as Infrastructure NT Commissioner, will take on the top job as Chief Executive of the Northern Territory Department of Logistics and Infrastructure (DLI). Louise is the current and first female Chair of the Austroads Board. Austroads Chief Executive Geoff Allan welcomed the news. “Louise has set a high standard of leadership and excellence,” he says.

Arup has appointed a new Australasian Offshore Wind Program Manager, Domenico Saporito, who will be based in Perth. With nearly two decades of global experience in renewable energy, transportation, marine and port infrastructure, Domenico had held leadership roles at industry giants such as RWE, Ørsted, Ramboll, and COWI.

Colliers Engineering & Design Australia is acquiring Western Australian engineering firm Pritchard Francis. Founded in 1977, Pritchard Francis has a 125-strong team of professionals serving clients in transportation, property, land development, industrial, mining and resources, and public infrastructure.

Step into the spotlight

With submissions for the Consult Australia Awards for Excellence open from 26 September, we are ready to shine the spotlight on businesses and people redefining engineering, design and advisory services across Australia’s built and natural environment. Here’s what you need to know.

Building with optimism and human ingenuity

To see optimism in action, talk to an engineer. In the engineering world, every problem has a solution, and it’s often better than first imagined. Just ask Lewis Macdonald, who leads Arup in WA and the engineering team responsible for Perth’s first timber hybrid office tower.

Trail blazers and career triumphs

When Arthur Psaltis scanned the graduating class of engineers at the University of Western Australia in July, he spotted a young woman he’d inspired four years earlier. Arthur’s speech, one of pride and passion for the engineering profession, is one we just had to share.

Five digital technologies that can deliver infrastructure faster

Governments can enable greater use of technologies in infrastructure projects, giving businesses the confidence to invest in the digital capabilities they need to grow, Infrastructure Victoria’s latest commissioned research finds.
