Benchmarking the built environment

Benchmarking the built environment

Macquarie Business Banking has been investing in industry benchmarking for decades – and its second built environment industry study is a chance for you to share your views.

Have you ever wondered how your business compares to industry peers? How are others responding to the challenge of economic transition? Or how are business owners building or protecting the value of the business asset that they’ve built over time? And how they’ll maximise value when it comes time to sell, merge, or pass equity to staff?

Australia’s economic growth and social wellbeing depends on the built environment sector. Architects, engineers, surveyors and consultants work together to create the vital infrastructure we depend on every day. The sector has demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability over the past few years, and now faces new challenges.

Macquarie Business Banking has been investing in industry benchmarking for decades; surveying property and professional services industries across metrics covering operational, financial, people, challenges and outlook. The purpose of these studies is to provide businesses within these industries with a picture of performance and perspective, and ways to maximise opportunities.

Macquarie is conducting its second built environment industry study, the last in market in 2019, prior to COVID-19 restrictions. It is seeking the views of engineers, architects, surveyors, certifiers and urban planners around Australia about their business’ strategy, operational models, finance and people metrics – and how challenges and focus will shape activity over the coming year.

In other industries that Macquarie has benchmarked in 2023, the cost of staff has had a significant impact on profits. Is the same challenge experienced in the built environment?

The outcomes of this survey will provide a rich data set to help assess your firm’s performance against industry peers. It will also provide valuable insights on how your business can continue to thrive through market changes and make the most of opportunities. With sufficient responses, there will be analysis by business size, state and industry. To ensure that a representative sample of businesses are covered in the study, we’d encourage all to be involved.

This 10-minute survey is completely anonymous and confidential, conducted by an external business consulting company which will provide aggregate data only to Macquarie, and have no access to the identity of participants.
