Why tomorrow’s consulting leaders won’t look like yesterday’s

Leadership in consulting is changing fast. Emotional intelligence, adaptability, creativity and collaboration are now as critical as technical know-how and project delivery. So how do we prepare tomorrow’s leaders?

The World Economic Forum’s 2025 Future of Jobs Report finds 39% of core job skills will change by 2030.

Both technical and human capabilities are valued. But there’s been a sharp rise in demand for creative and systems thinking, environmental stewardship, resilience, empathy and curiosity – alongside analytical skills and technological literacy.

“Tomorrow’s leaders need more than technical capability,” says Linda Gaunt, Consult Australia's Head of Engagement. “They need to build a suite of human-centric skills, including creative thinking and strategic insight, self-awareness and emotional intelligence.”

Developing future leaders

Consult Australia’s Future Leader Program has been answering this challenge for 15 years. In 2026, the program expands to Queensland, with courses in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

“The program builds real confidence in the ability to think and work across systems, and to connect across teams and disciplines.”

Designed for professionals with 5–10 years of experience, the immersive course covers everything from stakeholder engagement to strategic influence, negotiation to emotional intelligence.

Participants also work on a team project guided by senior mentors, and build a national network of peers across disciplines, firms, and geographies.

Here’s what past participants say:

  • “The collaborative environment helped reinforce the content and made the learning experience more memorable and impactful.” – Esther Soon, SMEC
  • “The diverse group of presenters from contract laws to personal branding really provide a spectrum of skills for your toolbox in creative ways.” – Brendan Walton, Arcadis
  • “I learnt to identify my strengths and understand how to effectively apply them to my project work, significantly enhancing my professional development.” – Dean Garroway, Jacobs

Small business scholarship opportunity

Once again, fully-funded scholarships will be available for small businesses (with fewer than 30 staff in each state) – one for each location. Valued at $7,970 (incl. GST), the scholarships offer access to a high-impact learning experience for those who might not otherwise get the chance.

“We’re laser-focused on helping small businesses thrive,” says Linda. “This is about building leadership depth in all corners of our industry.”
