Equity by Design, developed by the Champions of Change Architecture Group, demonstrates that thoughtful design benefits underrepresented groups and society as a whole.
Seamless step-free access benefits wheelchair users, but also supports parents with prams, older people with reduced mobility, or travellers with heavy luggage. Adaptive lighting enhances safety and visibility for women walking at night while improving the ambience for all travellers. Acoustic zoning benefits neurodiverse people who are sensitive to noise yet also creates better environments for anyone needing focus and respite. These are just three examples.
Equity by Design provides a structured approach to project planning and design. Using the Coalition’s 7 Switches framework, it helps decision-makers to systematically check for bias and integrate diverse perspectives into infrastructure, public spaces and workplaces.
Equity by Design is a powerful resource, because it demonstrates how thoughtful, inclusive design benefits everyone, says Coleen MacKinnon, Advisor to the Consult Australia Champions of Change Group.
