Designing for everyone

 Designing for everyone

When design is inclusive, everyone benefits. A new resource from the Champions of Change Coalition, Equity by Design, shows how embedding inclusivity into projects creates thriving places for all.

Equity by Design, developed by the Champions of Change Architecture Group, demonstrates that thoughtful design benefits underrepresented groups and society as a whole.

Seamless step-free access benefits wheelchair users, but also supports parents with prams, older people with reduced mobility, or travellers with heavy luggage. Adaptive lighting enhances safety and visibility for women walking at night while improving the ambience for all travellers. Acoustic zoning benefits neurodiverse people who are sensitive to noise yet also creates better environments for anyone needing focus and respite. These are just three examples.

Equity by Design provides a structured approach to project planning and design. Using the Coalition’s 7 Switches framework, it helps decision-makers to systematically check for bias and integrate diverse perspectives into infrastructure, public spaces and workplaces.

Equity by Design is a powerful resource, because it demonstrates how thoughtful, inclusive design benefits everyone, says Coleen MacKinnon, Advisor to the Consult Australia Champions of Change Group.

“This report isn’t about compliance or moral imperatives – it offers practical suggestions to help designers create places that empower everyone. When we design with equity in mind, we remove barriers, expand access and enable people to participate fully in society.”

Case studies in the report – from major sports stadiums to transport hubs – demonstrate how inclusive design principles can enhance safety, accessibility and overall user experience. The report also includes:

  • Practical actions for embedding equity into the earliest stages of project planning and design development, shaping design visions and priorities that respond to the needs of diverse communities
  • A spotlight on using the 7 Switches in the design of safe public urban spaces and equitable, public bathrooms
  • A literature review bringing together leading frameworks and resources on embedding gender-aware and equitable design principles into the built environment.

“The Consult Australia Champions of Change Group has grown from a single woman at the table to a majority – six out of eleven members – marking a significant shift in industry leadership. It is the only Champions of Change group with this status, and this evolution underscores the importance of sustained effort” notes Jonathan Cartledge, Consult Australia’s Chief Executive Officer and Convenor of the Consult Australia Champions of Change Group.

“Raising awareness of inequities is critical; but so is highlighting the broader benefits of inclusion. Lasting change comes when we engage all voices – including boys and men – and design solutions that are meaningful and effective for everyone. That’s what the Champions of Change does,” Jonathan concludes.
