Mates in Construction

Innovate, collaborate, elevate

The mental health of our people is paramount to the industry's success. Yet, it's a sobering reality that male workers in the construction industry face a disproportionately high risk of suicide compared to their counterparts in other sectors.

This stark reality underscores the urgent need for tangible intervention and support mechanisms. At the Collab X event, Consult Australia reaffirmed its commitment to fostering an environment where mental health is note merely a footnote, but a foundational principle.

Consult Australia, along with the Department of Defence, presented a $5,000 donation to Mates in Construction, a charity focused on suicide prevention for Australian construction workers. This donation was made possible by those who continue to support Collab X, and is a valuable cause all participants can be proud to get behind.

Founded in 2008, Mates in Construction offers a range of support services, training programs, and resources tailored to address the unique challenges faced by construction workers, particularly regarding mental health issues.

By fostering a supportive community and providing accessible resources, Mates in Construction aims to end the stigma regarding mental health in the construction industry and offer practical assistance to those in need.

Ian Jennings, Industry Blueprint Engagement Manager from Mates in Construction joined over 300 leaders across industry and government at Collab X earlier this month to accept this donation, amongst broad discussions regarding ‘collaborative exchange’ for the future of the industry. This contribution signifies a tangible step towards fostering a culture of care and resilience within the industry.

Tasos Katopodis, President of Consult Australia, aptly encapsulated the spirit of collaboration, remarking, "When we meet to support the delivery of our broader national security objectives, it is humbling to see how all of us and our firms work together to support that goal."

Consult Australia has a longstanding commitment to the mental health and wellbeing of the industry through our award-winning Mental Health Knowledge Hub.
