Build them and they’ll stay

Australia needs more engineering talent. But attraction is only half the equation. Once people enter the industry, how do we keep them and help them build careers?
A third of Australia’s engineers are under the age of 35, according to Engineers Australia.
“We know early-stage engineers are looking for progression, purpose and visible investment in their career development – and that is what the Future Leader Program is all about,” says Linda Gaunt, Consult Australia’s Head of Engagement.
Established in Sydney for nearly two decades and in Melbourne for the last three years, the Future Leader Program offers practical sessions, peer learning and an industry-led project.
“Participants develop confident, well-rounded leadership capability that is immediately applicable in the workplace. Participation in Melbourne has doubled over the last three years, which speaks to the value of the program.
“We are now taking registrations for Brisbane, with strong early interest ahead of the September intake. Retention doesn’t happen by chance – it’s built. And this is how our members build it.”
