New SME Board Member

We are pleased to announce that Holly Carson has been appointed to the Consult Australia Board, to increase the small business membership representation on the Board. Holly is Head of Corporate Services at Civil Geotechnical Consultants. Not only is Holly able to provide a small business perspective but will also enhance the cross section of skills on the Board through her knowledge of marketing and business strategy.

Our new Property Tax Reforms Working Group met for the first time in early August to discuss the new body of work we are undertaking on the topic. This working group will be developing a report on the types of property tax reforms that governments could introduce to increase private sector investment appetite for new building projects, and to deliver broader economic benefits.  We are particularly pleased with the uptake from SME members to join this group.

Government engagement

With the recent Cabinet reshuffle, we contacted the new Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Corey Wingard MP and have secured a meeting.  We will be advocating the government should target investments to develop the next phase of projects to feed the pipeline. This will help safeguard essential ‘front end’ jobs that specialise in turning project concepts into deliverables (i.e. through design, advisory, and engineering services), and will ensure there is a rolling pipeline of projects in line with the ongoing capacity of construction industry and support the economy in the longer-term. We know it is critical that governments recognise that it is our sector that is driving job growth and creation.

New monthly 'drop in' forum for SMEs

Our first SME Member Open Forum, providing direct access to Consult Australia's President, CEO and Policy Team, was a great success. With no set agenda, SME members had the opportunity to raise any and all concerns and questions. Topics covered included PI insurance, increasing red tape and the need for pipeline transparency. These will be held the first Wednesday of every second month with no registration required. Look out for your email invite to the next one on 7 October 2020, 4:30pm start.

Cbus delivers a positive result despite a challenging year

It’s safe to say 2020 is proving to be a challenging year.
In this year alone, we’ve experienced devastating bushfires in Australia and a global pandemic that caused unprecedented share market movements.
Despite the conditions, Cbus’ Growth (Cbus My Super) was able to deliver a positive result for the 2019/20 Financial Year of 0.75%*.
The longer term 5 and 10-year returns were 7.13% and 8.54% respectively, an important reminder that super is a long term investment.
Looking ahead, the construction and building industry will play a major role in what will be a long, nation-building recovery. Cbus is determined to play our part by investing our members’ savings back into the industry, creating jobs and contributing to a stronger economy.
