Sydney Airport: Future Vision and Upcoming Projects

Sydney Airport is one of the most significant pieces of infrastructure in Australia, with approximately 42 million passengers passing through each year, and generating $31 billion in economic activity annually. With strong growth forecast over the coming years, Sydney Airport is currently undertaking more than 200 construction projects, more than at any time since the 2000 Olympics – while planning continues for the longer term future of the airport.

Sydney Airport’s Chief Operating Officer, Hugh Wehby, will discuss the airport’s vision for the future, and the program of works to achieve that vision.

Hugh Wehby BEc (Hons), DipInvRel
Chief Operating Officer

Hugh was appointed COO in January 2017 and is responsible for Sydney Airport’s aviation business, working closely with the airport’s partners to drive the growth of the aviation industry. His role includes safety and security, service delivery, airline relationships, business development, long-term master planning and aeronautical financial performance.

Hugh’s current role follows a two-year period as the company’s CFO, in which he was responsible for strategic projects, investment, treasury, investor relations, procurement, sustainability and financial control. During this time, he was led the transition of ownership of Terminal 3 to Sydney Airport, refinanced $4 billion of debt, delivered a new five-year international aeronautical pricing agreement and consulted with the Commonwealth Government on Western Sydney Airport.

Prior to being appointed CFO, Hugh was Sydney Airport’s Head of Strategy & Capital Projects, including responsibility for investor relations. He was integral to acquiring the minority stakes in Sydney Airport, designing and delivering the structural simplification and negotiating the ATO settlement, leading to a transformation of the business in 2013.

Hugh has deep experience in the aviation sector with more than 12 years working with airports in Australia, Europe, UK and North America focused on identifying strategic growth opportunities, performance optimisation, negotiation of major contracts and mergers and acquisitions. In his former roles he worked with the management teams of Sydney, Bristol, Brussels, Copenhagen and Rome airports. He sat on the strategy committee for Brussels Airport and aeronautical pricing committees for Brussels and Copenhagen Airports.

Hugh was previously at Macquarie Group in the Infrastructure Funds team where he worked in both Sydney and London.
